Importance stratégique de ce château et de la baronie de Tournon : de l’autre côté du rhône le Dauphiné, depuis Vienne jusqu’à Saint-Paul-Trois-Château, relevait de l’Empire et non pas du Royaume de France, auquel il ne fut rattaché qu’en 1349. Le Vivarais lui-même a été terre d’Empire jusqu’en 1229. Les barons de Tournon reçurent les fonctions héréditaires de Conseillers et Chambellans des rois de France depuis Charles VI (1368-1422) jusqu’à Henri II (1519-1559).

Strategic importance of this castle and the barony of Tournon: on the other side of the Rhône the Dauphiné, from Vienne to Saint-Paul-Trois-Château, came under the Empire and not the Kingdom of France, to which it was not attached until 1349. Vivarais itself was land of the Empire until 1229. The barons of Tournon received the hereditary functions of Councilors and Chamberlains of the kings of France from Charles VI (1368-1422) until to Henry II (1519-1559).
